As the number of phone numbers on the National Do Not Call (DNC) Registry surpassed 139 million, the Federal Trade Commission today reiterated that despite the claims made in e-mails circulating on the Internet, consumers should not be concerned that their cell phone numbers will be released to telemarketers at any time in the near future. In addition, according to the agency, it is not necessary to register cell phone numbers on the DNC Registry to be protected from most telemarketing calls to cell phones.
The truth about cell phones and the DNC Registry is:
* Contrary to the e-mail, cell phone numbers are NOT being released to telemarketers, and you will NOT soon be getting telemarketing calls on your cell phone.

The deadline for the City's $10K Community Beautification Grant is quickly approaching (October 17th), and traditionally our community never gets its fair share because fewer people/organizations apply and apply correctly.

United American Indian Involvement, Inc. has partnered with LensCrafters/"Gift of Sight Program" to provide free eye care and glasses for children and youth ages 4 to 21. This eye clinic is open to all communities, "no documents required." Just a signed consent form by the parents or guardians for minors under 18 years of age. Anyone who cannot afford and eye exam and/or glasses will eligible whether or not they have insurance, as long as they are within the target ages. Scheduling of appointments begins in August.

Start a Block Club
Please plan to join the Southwest Community Police Station, Community-Police Advisory Board, and the Community Relations staff for Block Club Training on August 18, 2007.
We really need to get motivated and join together to make this a better community. Unfortunately, it's the same people who respond to the call. Let's make a difference and recruit our neighbors to start a block club.
LAPD can't do it all! We need the Community to take a stand and increase our block clubs. Plan on attending and bring a neighbor (or two) with you. Again it is Saturday, August 18, 2007, from 9 am -12 noon, Expo Park Intergenerational Community Center at 3980 S. Menlo, L.A., California.
The meeting will cover everything you ever wanted to know about planning, organizing and rejuvenating a Block Club.

Night Out on Crime

The Van Buren Place Community Restoration Association is joining with the Adams Normandie Neighborhood Association (ANNA) for our annual National Night Out on Crime neighborhood march and potluck.
This year will be the 24th Annual National Night Out, a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, on Tuesday, August 7, 2007.
Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 34 million people participated in NNO 2006.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:
* Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
* Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs
* Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
* Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
We will assemble at 6:30 pm at 1658 W 23rd Street, north of Adams Blvd. Bring your potluck dish. The march, with support from Southwest Division LAPD, will begin at 7:00 pm and cover both sides of Adams Blvd. this year, returning to 23rd Street for a community potluck with lots of good food.
